During a state appeal hearing last month, former Sgt. James Gray pleaded guilty to one count of official misconduct. His case was the second filed in Missouri this year against a K.C. officer accused of sexual misconduct.

In February, former Sgt. Quinton Gray was sentenced to 20 years in prison after a jury found him guilty on five counts of forcible rape. Quinton Gray was charged along with his brother and two police captains, but the brothers were acquitted in March on all charges.

James Gray was placed on desk duty after he was arrested in November 2013, according to court documents.

A woman who agreed to go with Gray to a hotel told the Kansas City Star that he was angry that she had made sexual advances at the hotel bar on the night before. He told her he had a gun, and she initially thought he was joking.

When he showed her the gun, however, she was terrified, she told the Star.

The woman told police that she followed Gray through the hotel and asked a desk clerk for help. She said she had been raped.

After she reported the incident, Gray was fired.

Dorothy Swain, the mother of the victim, said she was satisfied with the sentence, but disappointed the former officer was allowed to continue working. She said she believed he should have been prohibited from holding any public office or using a government position to benefit himself.

Dorothy Swain’s daughter, Peggy, died in 2004 after being shot and stabbed. Swain said she didn’t want her family to be blamed for the crime. She said Gray’s case could have served as a teaching moment to her six children.

“It’s about teaching children that what is done in the dark stays in the dark,” she said.

“He took advantage of his position, and for that he should be punished,” she added.
